Top universities
A testament to each country’s global reputation as education destinations, is the inclusion of several of their top universities in QS’s rank-list of the World’s top 50 universities.
UK: The UK is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, with its university system influencing several the world over. Some of its top universities for international students include University College London, ranked 8th worldwide, the University of Edinburgh, ranked 20th, the University of Manchester, ranked 27th, and King’s College London, ranked 33rd.
Australia: Australia’s Top 5 universities have each achieved top-most ranks — with Australian National University in 1st place with a global rank of 29, followed by the University of Melbourne in 38th place, the University of Sydney in 42nd, University of New South Wales in 43rd, and the University of Queensland in 47th.

Top subjects
The following are the most popular subjects for which international students seek to Study Abroad in the UK and Australia. Some of these subjects will overlap, owing to their general popularity the world over.
UK: The subjects that are in greatest demand among international students include Business (i.e. MBA), Natural Sciences (particularly Biological sciences), Engineering, Medicine (particularly dentistry, pharmacy and nursing), and the Social Sciences (particularly Psychology).

Admissions
Universities in both the UK and in Australia have competitive entry, and the minimum requirements are high.
UK: Indian 3-year Bachelor’s degrees (i.e. BA, BSc, BCom) are accepted by most UK universities. It must be the equivalent of either a UK First Class i.e. with an overall percentage of 75%, or of a UK 2:1 i.e. with an overall percentage of 65%, with the required score depending on the programme. In certain cases, the equivalency of the Indian Bachelors might depend on which is the awarding institution.
Australia: Like the UK, Indian 3-year Bachelor’s Degrees are considered for admission to postgraduate programmes in Australia. Certain academically-advanced programmes would require the candidate to have an Honors degree, i.e. involving the 3-year Bachelors with an additional 4th year. Both the UK and Australia require international candidates to submit proof of English language proficiency. The preferred test by both countries is IELTS, with the minimum average score usually set at 6.5, with individual band scores of at least 6.0.
Cost of Study
UK: UK tuition fees are generally considered to be among the world’s highest for overseas education. The tuition fee for most Master’s programmes ranges between 20–37000 AUD per annum, varying as per factors such as area of study or university. At the current rate of conversion, this would amount to about 10–18,00,000 INR.
Similarly stipulated by the Visa requirements, the funds needed to live and Study in Australia is set at 20–25000 AUD per annum, with location-based variations among metropolitan and regional areas. Duration of programme and Semester system
Australia: A Masters by coursework programme is typically of 1.5–2 years’ duration.
Semester 1 commences in February-March, or as late as April in certain universities, while Semester 2 commences in July-August, or as late as September.
UK: A Taught Masters programme is typically of 1 year’s duration.

Credit and Grading system
Australia: For each course of study, you earn a credit value. Credits reflect the number of hours per week you are expected to study a certain subject. In Australian universities, each subject usually has a value between 6 and 8. Work while studying
Both countries have similar specifications regarding international students working for the duration of their studies.
UK: International students on a Tier 4 Student Visa are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during the term, and full-time during the holidays. The types of work permitted include work on the university campus/for a university-affiliated employer, such as a teaching/research assistantship.
Australia: The Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) permits international students studying in Australia to undertake up to 40 hours of work per fortnight during the working semester, and unlimited hours of work during the holiday periods.
Post-study work opportunities
UK: From 2012 onwards, the UK had imposed strict regulations on international students seeking to stay back in the country to look for work, with a limited allowance of 4 months’ duration, as well as a cap on the number of visas awarded. However, for students who enrol in 2020–2021 onwards, the regulations are set to be loosened considerably — with the UK government’s announcement of a new Graduate Route, allowing international students who graduate with an undergraduate degree or higher to remain in the UK for 2 years, with opportunities to stay on longer upon finding suitable employment. The new regulations are slated to increase the UK’s popularity as a Study Abroad destination.
Australia: Introduced in 2013, the Post-Study Work Stream Visa is for recent graduates with a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree awarded by an Australian University. With this visa, the candidate is allowed to remain in the country to live and work for 2–4 years, depending on the qualification level — for instance, a graduate with a Master’s by coursework degree is entitled to stay for 2 years.
